The ALGCE has released a major research report entitled Consolidation in Local Government: A Fresh Look.  It explores the options available for local government to increase its capacity and provide improved services. The research covers both Australia and New Zealand.  Download a copy of the document here.

In the past local government reform has focused strongly on council amalgamations and cost savings. The ALGCE research sought a more balanced approach, taking into account the importance of good governance and effective local democracy and representation. It also looks at the aftermath of previous efforts at reform through a series of in-depth case studies and interviews with senior figures in local government.

The report, along with other related material, can be downloaded from ALGCE’s website by clicking on this link http://www.acelg.org.au/news-detail.php?id=148

Ian Webb, CEO Roads Australia, put forward the proposition that the driverless car is the answer to our road safety, asset management, congestion problems at the recent IPWEAvic Public Works Management Conference held on 11 and 12 May.  He says that the concept is not too far away and has potential to take over with the same speed that the mobile phone infiltrated our population.  The proposition considers Taxis will be a thing of the past, no more traffic lights, the need to own cares will diminish and we should be looking at the infrastructure needed for the driverless car.  There are currently such cars on the streets of New York, able to drive within 600mm of the car in front at high speeds.  Note that farm machinery used for ploughing and crops is equipped with GPS and is essentially driverless.

Geoff Glynn and Bruce Douglas received IPWEAvic Service Awards for their service to IPWEA as IPWEAvic Board members.  The awards were presetned by the National IPWEA President, John Truman and President of MAV at a Gala Dinner at Plaza Ballroom on 11 May 2011.

At the Plaza Ballroom on Tuesday 11 May 2011 some 370 people created the atmosphere of the Gala Dinner that incorporated the announcement of the winners of IPWEAvic 2011 Awards for Excellence.  Congratulations to all the finalists.
