Held on 26th and 27 September 2013 the National Works & Engineering Conference for 2013 was a great success. With over 300 participants, a hall full of exhibitors and opportunities to see first hand how some products are used, it created a great atmosphere of camaraderie amongst all public works practitioners present.
The opening session motivational speaker had a clear message that communication is key to leadership.
The dinner speaker showed us one way to be famous is to pick something that no one else is famous for – in his case it was being the Australian Sudoko champion.
The tool box sessions were popular. Here, graffiti removal products are being demonstrated.
A demonstration patch was successfully placed in a section of the car park in about half an hour.
The closing speaker was Steve Monoghetti, our famous marathon runner from Ballarat. He spoke about his journey to reach the commonwealth games team and then on to the olympics team using the term POWER where “P” is potential and “R” is the ability to realise the potential and the “OWE” is an outstanding work ethic or in other words shear hard work!

Ross Goyne, Footy Tipping co-ordinator for 2013, donned his footy jersy and announced the winners of the footy tipping competition at the IPWEAvic Annual Dinner held on 10th October 2013. The competition was generously sponsored by Sovereign Financial and Sarah and Justin from Sovereign Financial were there to hand out the prizes. The major prizes were awarded to:
Phillip McDonald – 1st Prize $200
Steve Adams – 2nd Prize $100
Phillip Jeffery – 3rd Prize $50
Numerous bottles of wine were also given out to lucky tipsters!

An IPWEAvic Leadership Series Event was held in conjunction with the IPWEAvic Annual Dinner on the evening of 10th October 2013 with guest speaker, Mr David Eltringham, the IPWEAvic Public Works Practitioner of the Year.
David presented an entertaining account of his role as an Engineering Leader in a rural community and shared his journey with us. David listed the following six points as values of effective leadership:
- create a shared vision
- communicate
- be seen
- care for those you lead
- develop two way trust
- acknowledge achievement
Communication was the key in David’s ability to lead the Wimmera Intergrated Freight Terminal Project through all stages of its life cycle resulting in a facility that will enhance the economic development of the Wimmera regional area. Relationship management, leadership skills and financial management are the top skills David sees an aspiring local government engineer requires in today’s world.
We were honored and David made a 4 hour round trip to be with us at this event.
