The Asset Management Technical Reference Group will meet on Thursday 24th March 2011 between 1pm and 4pm upstairs at Best Point showroom Bridge Road Richmond.

Two speakers will feature at the meeting

Phil Edwards from Melbourne Water will speak on Stormwater Harvesting and Integrated Water Management.   He will discuss environmental protection, liveability, engineering solutions, and some life cycle comparisons between business as usual and off the shelf innovations.                                                                                                         

Jonathon Nielson from Walker Corporation will speak on the Latest trends in streetscape design and construction .  Case Study: WalkerCorporation is delivering an Urban Land Authority development at Point Cook.  The project will result in new assets and streetscape for the City of Wyndham that accord with the Project Brief and specification.

The Victorian State Government has named a new ministerial advisory council to produce a roadmap for its new urban water strategy.  It will make recommendations to guide the establishment of Melbourne as a leader in integrated water cycle management and sustainability to make urban landscape more amendable.  The ministerial advisory council will deliver a report by 11 March

David Eltringham from Engineers Australia is organising a debrief for Municipal Engineers involved in the recent flood events.  This will occur on 15th and 16th March at the Port of Echuca Motel/Conference Centre, 465 High St Echuca . 

The event will kick off with an informal lunch between 12noon and 2pm followed by an open discussion between 2pm and 5pm concluding in a shared evening dinner.  John Forrest, local MP, has agreed to attend the gathering.  Day two will commence at 8:30am and will go through until 3pm with an improessivel line up of speakers to stimulate discussion aound emergency management and the flooding issues in country Victoira in particular.

The National Congress of Engineers Australia has approved a new Code of Ethics and Guidelines on Professional Conduct.  IPWEA is an (independently operating) technical society of Engineers Australia. In view of this association, the IPWEA National Board considers it appropriate that it adopt a Code of Ethics for IPWEA that aligns with the new EA Code of Ethics.
The adoption of the new Code of Ethics by EA followed an extensive review process over the last two years and substantial input from EA members and external experts.
The aim was to produce a Code of Ethics which met the following key objectives:

 In summary, the Code of Ethics adopted by Engineers Australia is structured around 4 principles as follows.

 “In the course of engineering practice we will:

1. Demonstrate integrity
1.1 Act on the basis of a well-informed conscience
1.2 Be honest and trustworthy
1.3 Respect the dignity of all persons

2. Practise competently
2.1 Maintain and develop knowledge and skills
2.2 Represent areas of competence objectively
2.3 Act on the basis of adequate knowledge

3. Exercise leadership
3.1 Uphold the reputation and trustworthiness of the practice of engineering
3.2 Support and encourage diversity
3.3 Communicate honestly and effectively, taking into account the reliance of others on engineering expertise

4. Promote sustainability
4.1 Engage responsibly with the community and other stakeholders
4.2 Practise engineering to foster the health, safety and wellbeing of the community and the environment
4.3 Balance the needs of the present with the needs of future generations.”

Ultimately a reference to an adopted Code of Ethics could be incorporated into the IPWEA Constitution.

The IPWEAvic Board is considering this approach and is seeking feedback from members.  If you would like to comment on this code of ethics can you please submit your comments to IPWEAvic @ vic@ipwea.org.au by end of March 2011.

Comment on the Draft NRSS are currently being sought.   Public submissions can be made through the website of the Commonwealth Department of Infrastructure and Transport (www.infrastructure.gov.au) until close of business Friday, 18 February.
