Ian Webb, CEO Roads Australia, put forward the proposition that the driverless car is the answer to our road safety, asset management, congestion problems at the recent IPWEAvic Public Works Management Conference held on 11 and 12 May.  He says that the concept is not too far away and has potential to take over with the same speed that the mobile phone infiltrated our population.  The proposition considers Taxis will be a thing of the past, no more traffic lights, the need to own cares will diminish and we should be looking at the infrastructure needed for the driverless car.  There are currently such cars on the streets of New York, able to drive within 600mm of the car in front at high speeds.  Note that farm machinery used for ploughing and crops is equipped with GPS and is essentially driverless.
