The Murray Goulburn Regional Group met on Friday 1 July 2011 at Boort.  After a presentation by Dial Before U Dig the group undertook a field trip to the “Cobram Olive” grove at Boort. Her the group was introduced to some 2,500 ha of olives and the self-driven machine that moves at 0.3km/hr along the rows shaking the trees to collect the olives at harvest time.

The Wimmera-Mallee Regional Group met on 14th June at Horsham.  At this meeting David Eltrigniham resigned as secretary to the group handing over the reigns to Martin Duke.   Colin Mibus took on the role of Chair for the meeting.

On 28th July 2011 the Engineers Australia Women in Engineering Group supported by IPWEAvic will hold an evening meal ($20 cost) at Sailors Rest, Moorabool Street Geelong betwen 6pm and 9pm.  Download event brochure here.  Two presenters, Dr Mark Toner and Ms Gunilla Burrowes, will address the dinner on Improving Career Prospects in a Male-Dominated Organisation. Mark  and  Gunilla  will  discuss  the problems female engineers may face in male-dominated organisations, and suggest a set of skills which women can develop to understand the following:

•     Male-female differences in decision-making, communication and assertiveness
•     The unwritten “rules” of the organisational game they are playing as employees
•     Leadership skills to increase their personal power, and
•     How to “play” the game to enhance their career prospects.

The Gippsland Regional Group met on Monday 27 June 2011 at Traralgon.  The meeting was sponsored by HDS Australia Pty Ltd.

  • Peter Edwards, Executive Engineer Traffic and Transport HDS Australia spoke to the group about Road Infrastructure Asset Management from a Safety Perspective.
  • Richard Brammall – Coordinator Civil Works Projects at Latrobe City Council presented the Hockey Pitch construction project in the grounds of Monash University Churchill which needed to comply with standards of playability and industry practices.
  • Linda Hasthorpe – Coordinator Infrastructure Planning at Latrobe City Council gave a brief overview on major projects, including the redevelopment of the leisure centre at Churchill, the Moe Southside Precinct and the Moe rail precinct revitalisation.

The NZ Ingenium Conference was held 16-18 June 2011 in Wellington NZ.  Smart Planning, Smart Performance, Smart Outcomes was the theme of the conference.  Papers from the conference can be accessed here.

ARRB hosted an IPWEAvic Information Series Event on Wednesday 29th June.  Dr Robert Urquhart, Principal Scientist ARRB Group, gave a presentation covering the long term performance tests and construction performance tests commonly used for bitumen and PMB relating the standardes to everyday items from tomoato sauce, shoe heels to heineken beer!  This event was a great refresher for those who have not visited testing requirements since their university days and a terrrific knowledge booster for all Local Government Engineers.
