CPEE short courses are highly regarded and are in fact based on the post graduate Distance Learning Units used in our Graduate Certificate and Master of Technology specialist programs.  The Short Courses are designed to help fast track learning of those already with some experience, or in need of quick up take on the specialist knowledge/subject being covered.

IPWEA (NSW) is pleased to announce the publication of the 6th edition of The Gangers Handbook.

This guide is for use by field staff in city, urban and country situations and is also a valuable guideline to younger engineers as they gain experience in the field.

The handbook will be officially launched during the Works Officers Conference in Wollongong from 20th to 22nd October 2010.

The social procurement guide, ‘Social Procurement: A Guide For Victorian Local Government’, was launched on Wednesday Oct 13 by Richard Wynne MP, Minister for Local Government, Minister for Housing and Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.   The guide has been developed for Victorian councils wanting to use their purchasing power to create positive social outcomes for their communities. This guide is designed to:

• assist councils that are interested in exploring social procurement but are relatively new to the concept
• provide greater guidance to councils already undertaking social procurement
• support council officers who are championing social procurement within their workplaces
• offer an opportunity for councils to effectively incorporate social procurement into their procurement roadmap process as part of the Procurement Excellence Program.

Social procurement involves using procurement processes and purchasing power to generate positive social outcomes in addition to the delivery of efficient goods, services and works. For local government, social procurement builds on initiatives already undertaken by the sector in enhancing sustainable and strategic procurement practice, enabling procurement to effectively contribute to building stronger communities and meeting the social objectives of councils.

Social procurement can assist councils to:

• address complex local challenges facing Victorian communities
• ensure their procurement practices are sustainable and strategically aligned with council objectives
• build and maintain strong communities by generating local employment (particularly among disadvantaged residents), promoting social inclusion and strengthening the local economy
• strengthen partnerships with a diverse range of community and government stakeholders
• demonstrate leadership across the wider community and local government sector
• achieve greater value for money for their communities.

This guide aims to support Victorian councils in their desire to deliver stronger social outcomes through procurement, and has been developed with the Centre for Social Impact’s assistance. It is closely aligned with ‘Social Procurement in Australia’, an overarching national paper commissioned by CSI which will be available soon.

Councillors, CEOs and Directors of Engineering are encouraged to register for the complementary Roads Australia-VicRoads Local Government Forum to be held at the Manningham Function Centre on the 12^th November.

 The objective of the Forum is to provide an opportunity for Local Government and VicRoads to exchange perspectives in relation to the delivery of the Victorian Transport Plan and roads related programs and to jointly identify opportunities for enhancing stakeholder relationships in relation thereto.
